Corpus boundary — Schopenhauer v1

Fixed before any extraction (same discipline as the Nietzsche/Tolstoy builds).

Included — the bounded proof corpus

  • The Wisdom of Life (Die Weisheit des Lebens) — from Aphorismen zur
    Lebensweisheit
, itself part of Parerga und Paralipomena (1851).
EN: T. Bailey Saunders translation, Gutenberg #10741. Units wl.intro.*,
    wl.1.*wl.4.* (Introduction + chapters I–IV; ch. IV = «Position»).
  • Counsels and Maxims (Paränesen und Maximen) — same Aphorismen volume.
    EN: Saunders, Gutenberg #10715. Units cm.intro.* (3) + cm.1cm.53
numbered Sections (50 present; Sections 4, 21, 47 absent from the source).

These two practical treatises are the whole evidence pool: compact,
debate-ready, and self-contained on the eudaemonological question.

Included as arbiter only, not as evidence pool

  • German original (Aphorismen zur Lebensweisheit) — consulted to fix the
canonical sense of key terms (Wille, Vorstellung, Mitleid, Langeweile). Not
ingested as units; no quote is pinned to it. See TERMINOLOGY.md.
  • The World as Will and Representation (WWR) — the source of Schopenhauer's
metaphysics (Will as thing-in-itself, denial of the will, aesthetic
contemplation, compassion as the basis of morality). Referenced by name where
the Aphorisms point back to it (Schopenhauer himself cites «my chief work»),
but not ingested — so those doctrines get concept pages marked
evidence: metaphysics_outside_corpus, with no quotes attributed to the
    Aphorisms
    .

Excluded

  • Kaufmann / Payne / Hollingdale translations — not public domain; never used.
  • WWR, On the Basis of Morality, On the Fourfold Root as primary evidence.
  • Any Russian translation as an evidence pool: no clean PD Russian Saunders-
equivalent was found, so the RU layer in this KB is our own translation
(«перевод наш»), made from the German original with Saunders cross-check, and
is a reading layer, not the verbatim anchor.
  • Internet «лучшие цитаты Шопенгауэра» without an edition trace.

Reason

The Aphorisms are deep public domain (Schopenhauer d. 1860; Saunders EN is
pre-1930 US-PD and Saunders d. 1928 → EU-PD). They give a bounded, verifiable
English text to anchor every quote. The metaphysics that the debate layer wants
(the Will as thing-in-itself, asceticism, compassion-ethics) lives in WWR, so it
is named honestly as outside this corpus rather than faked with Aphorism
quotes it does not contain.

The verbatim anchor for the whole vault is the English Saunders text
(sources/aphorisms_en_units.json); the gate is sources/check_quotes.py.
